Tuckpointing

Tuckpointing is the process of replacing of old mortar joints in the masonry wall with new mortar. Re-pointed walls gain structural integrity. In addition, impermeability (resistance to moisture) is increased, and the service also improves the visual appearance of the wall. At the end, the service prevents further damage and prolongs life of the wall.

It is important to address any deficiencies of mortar joints in early stages of degradation. Allowing deep washouts may lead to brick damage, water penetration and also interior and structural damage. Areas particularly prone to suffer from poor masonry joint conditions are at the bottom and top of the walls. Cracks visible near top of the windows and doors are usually a result of deteriorating lintels and therefore may need more complex service, including lintel replacement.

Tuckpointing, Chicago and environmental aspects

Mortar joints deteriorate with age. After all, entropy is immaculate property of a matter and it applies to buildings, as well. What may look as a sound wall on the outside, can hide a surprise on the inside. Masonry walls are usually 2-3 columns of brick across. Vertical brick columns are called – wythes. Influence of  harsh, Chicago weather on the exterior surface is well known. However, weather and time have negative influence on the interior of masonry walls, as well. Frequently, what seems to be just a surface problem may escalate. As a result of hidden weakness of interior mortar, project may turn into a rebuilding of section of the wall.

Very often, washouts and visible, joint damage prompts a request for grinding of existing mortar and tuck pointing of entire sections. In such case, it is important to know that pollution and silica dust control regulations obligate masonry contractors and owners to follow certain procedures.  In addition to a permit, nearby properties must be notified.
