Parapet Wall

Parapet wall is one of the most common element of Chicago architecture. No wonder, it crowns walls on most of buildings with flat roofs.  Due to their exposure to harsh Chicago weather, parapet walls require attention and proper maintenance. To make things easier, we’ll call them parapets.

So, parapets are usually covered with something. Mosty with clay copings or limestone. It is very important to maintain copings and their connections. Importantly, newer buildings often need more attention. Why newer buildings need more attention?

Parapet wall, importance for roofing

Why parapets are very important for roofs? Flat roof rafters are anchored inside the walls. Thus entire roof structure depends on them. Since crumbling and damaged parapets may allow water to enter the interior of the building, this may prove to be dangerous for roof structure. Particularly if leaks occur over period of time. Even small , undetected water leaks, could be costly. At first, water may create a “water pocket”. A bubble filled with water, trapped under the membrane. Surely, this water will get in. Next you know, roof sheathing and rafters are getting damaged. Sadly enough, these repairs are costly. In order to avoid costly damage, periodical inspections or parapets and roofs are necessary.
