Chimney capsĀ are necessary elements of every chimney. Caps protect chimneys from water and ice therefore they should be sound and solid. Most caps are precast concrete pieces. We install them on smaller, more common chimneys. As for larger chimneys, we install custom poured, concrete caps. Some of them are large and heavy to provide necessary protection for sizable chimneys. When properly installed, a concrete cap should have an overhanging edge to provide protection for the masonry underneath it. Often he cap has a built-in pitch to allow water to drip off. In contrast, lack of such protection will lead to quick decline of masonry elements of a chimney.
Chimney caps, other materials
While concrete caps are most common ones visible in the area, some other materials are used as well. For instance, limestone and brick chimney toppings are also popular. These however, require more frequent maintenance. Firstly, because of masonry joints they have, water and ice can damage them quicker. Also both materials have much less density then concrete as well. Thus leading to water saturation and faster decline of the chimney. For more information about chimney repairs, please click here.
