A cornice is a horizontal, decorative molding which crowns the facade of the building. Most cornices are outward projecting, overhanging above the elevation. Since cornices are mostly an ornament of the past, they often require a cornice repair, of some degree. Great majority of cornices are mage of metal. Among these copper are most prominent but cornices mage of steel are more common. Some buildings, mostly , so called “grey stones” have stone cornices.
Cornice repair or replacement.
As mentioned above many cornices are metal structures. Every metal has a tendency to rust. One thing leads to another and here you go. We have a rusty cornice. Of course we can paint it but at some point rust prevails and holes start to show up. These holes are perfect nesting grounds for birds, squirrels, wasps and hornets. Moreover, water and ice gets in. Since the location is critical, after all it’s a top of the wall, damages might be costly, as well. So, on top of creating whole new ecosystem above our heads we also can have pieces of metal falling on our heads. After all cornice is usually on top of the front elevation. Adding water leaks through damaged structure that eventually will be harmful to the entire wall and interiors, will probably, convince anyone about importance of repairs.
There are times, however when it is too late for the repair and cornice must be replaced. Here, at Best Brickmasters we can do all. Whether cornice needs repairs or replacement our roofing crew, a part of Illinois Home Improvement and our masons can help. If damages are manageable, we can repair damaged metal and repaint the cornice. But in case, the structure is no longer sound we can replace it. Replacement could include installation of new cornice or substituting it with bricks or stone. Lastly, we work on buildings located in Chicago Landmark District.
