Whether the chimney is made of masonry or frame it should have a chimney liner. Frame chimneys are usually lined with b-vent type liners and are not a subject of this article. We will concentrate on masonry chimneys at this time. Clay flue liners are perfect example of a masonry chimney lining. They offer perfect protection from extreme heat of exhaust fumes. However, many chimneys either don’t have clay liners or their flue pipes are damaged with age. Chimney without the liner is exposed to high temperatures and condensation.
Particularly during winter season, vapor and moisture from furnaces condensates on cold surfaces of chimney. Clients usually report this fact, as leak around the chimney. Therefore concrete block chimneys suffer the most. Blocks can absorb water like a sponge and transfer moisture with ease. In case of leak take please note when it takes place. Timing is often very important to determine the cause.
Heat and condensation create pressure on exterior bricks. Differences in temperature, between the outside and inside may cause bricks to crack. In addition loose mortar is washed out by water. As a result, interior water damage and structural chimney damage may occur.
Chimney liner installation
In case of damaged or lack of clay flue lines, installation of flexible, metal liner may be the only way to protect chimney and interiors. Usually large portion of the chimney is not accessible for total rebuilding. Obviously, no one would resort to demolish interior walls, unless absolutely needed. Therefore, an independent metal liner is necessary to isolate exhaust fumes from contact with inside surfaces of the chimney. Aluminum or stainless steel liners are most common liners currently available on the market.
